Greek Evzones of the 1-38 Evzones Regiment advance towards Turkish positions, 1921

Evzones of the 1/38 attack in Asia Minor, August 1921

The 1/38 Evzone Regiment (Greek: 1/38 Σύνταγμα Ευζώνων, 1/38 ΣΕ) or 38th Regiment (38° Σύνταγμα) was an elite regiment of Evzones of the Hellenic Army, recruited in Thessaly and headquartered in Karditsa. It was formed in 1913 after the Balkan Wars, as part of the 1st Infantry Division. In 1919, it participated in the Greek landing at Smyrna, and took part in the subsequent battles of the Asia Minor Campaign. The unit also took part in the Greco-Italian War, and was disbanded after the conquest of the country by the Germans in 1941. During the subsequent occupation, the largest armed resistance group, the Greek People's Liberation Army, formed its own unit named after the regiment.
