Major-General Arthur Wollaston Bartholomew CB CMG CBE DSO (5 May 1878 – 29 January 1945) was Commander of British Troops in China.
Military career[]
Bartholomew was commissioned into the Royal Artillery in 1900.[1]
He was a keen cricketer and played for Berkshire County Cricket Club in the Minor Counties Championship.[2]
He became an Adjutant in 1910[3] and then served in World War I, initially as a Brigade Major[4] and then as a General Staff Officer.[5]
In 1929 he became an Instructor at the Senior Officers' School[6] and in 1931 he was made Commander Royal Artillery for 4th Division[7] Then in 1933 he was appointed Inspector of the Royal Artillery.[8]
He became Commander of British Troops in China in 1935.[9] He retired in 1938[10] and became Lieutenant of the Tower of London.[11] He was also Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery from 1942[12] until his death and Aide-de-Camp to King George V.[13]
He lived at The Manor House in Ottery St Mary in Devon.[14]
