On 22 February, a Chadian army contingent is ambushed by Islamists while on its way to a detachment of the French army. The column is ambushed on all sides by mortars and heavy weapons. The results are disastrous. At least 68 Chadian soldiers are said to have been killed on the spot. Fifteen armored vehicles are abandoned and 35 pick-up trucks were destroyed. The 68 soldiers killed included head commander of the Chadian intervention in Mali, AbdelAziz Hassane Adam. The ambushed is deemed catastrophic that it let 200 Chadian soldiers to desert upon hearing the news. The 23 soldiers reportedly captured are all executed, but one who carried a muslim religious symbol who was let free.[1][3][4][5][6]
