His work has been widely popular in Australia and New Zealand; public art galleries in Australia and New Zealand hold large collections of his work. Buckmaster disliked modern art, publicly denigrating it in letters to a newspaper. Buckmaster was a Second World War official war artist for the Australian military's Military History Section . Part of his duties took him to Singapore .
Buckmaster's work is on loan to the Windsor Hotel in Melbourne.
