The 178th Field Artillery Regiment or (178 FA) was a former field artillery regiment of the United States Field Artillery Branch. The regiment was composed of members from the following national guards: Tennessee, Mississippi, and South Carolina. The regiment's only commander until World War II was Colonel Vernon T. Anderson.
History[]
The regiment was first constituted in the National Guard attached to the IV Corps and alloted to Tennessee, Mississippi, and South Carolina. The regiment had the following structure:
- Regimental Headquarters—Mississippi at Greenwood
- Headquarters Battery—Mississippi
- 1st Battalion—Mississippi at Greenville
- Service Battery—Mississippi
- 2nd Battalion—Tennessee in Maryville
- 3rd Battalion—South Carolina
On 18 December 1929 the regiment was relieved from assignment to the IV Corps and attached to the 31st Infantry Division. On 15 November 1932 the 1st battalion was moved to the 114th Field Artillery Regiment. After the loss of the 1st battalion the regiment was attached to the 13th Field Artillery Brigade assigned to the IV Corps. On 29 September 1939 the regiment was relieved and assigned to the I Corps. On 27 January 1941 the regiment was assigned to Federal Service and moved to Fort Bragg. During the Cold War the 3rd battalion was a MLRS unit based in Lancaster, South Carolina. Today the regiment only exists as the 1st Battalion, 178th Field Artillery Regiment (1-178th ADAR). The regiment is now an air defence artillery regiment. The battalion now consists of:
- Headquarters and Headquarters Battery at Georgetown
- A Battery - Andrews Armory
- B Battery - Clinton Armory
- C Battery - Manning Armory
- Service Battery - Inman
- 1178th Forward Support Company at Hemingway Armory (Maintenance)
Recently the battalion deployed to Iraq after the end of the Iraq War.
