Julius von Bernuth (12 August 1897 – 12 July 1942) was a German general (Generalmajor) who served during World War II.
Biography
Julius Hans Camillo Friedrich Leo Ludwig von Bernuth was born in Metz, Alsace-Lorraine, on 12 August 1897. Julius von Bernuth joined a cadet school in Karlsruhe.
During the First World War, von Bernuth fought as a Lieutenant in the 115th Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment of the 49th Infanterie-Brigade of the Ducal Hessian Division. During the war, von Bernuth received the Iron Cross.
After the war, von Bernuth continued to serve with the Reichswehr in a variety of staff roles and was promoted to Major, in January 1936. Now serving with the Wehrmacht, von Bernuth was promoted to Lieutenant colonel (Oberstleutnant), and by 1939, had risen to the role of Chief of the General Staff of the XV. Armee-Korps.
On 5 August 1940, von Bernuth received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He was promoted to Colonel in December 1940 and Brigadier General (Generalmajor) on April 1942.
On 12 July 1942, while flying to his headquarters, his aircraft exploded and crashed, near Ssochkranaja, on the Eastern Front.
