His award citation reads:
- The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Leroy C. Anderson (ASN: 36201460), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 192d Tank Battalion, in action against enemy forces on 3 February 1942, in destroying Japanese machinegun nests with a small group of tanks deploying through heavy jungle country in the Philippine Islands. When his tank was demolished Sergeant Anderson's crew proceeded on foot and continued to fight with rifles and hand grenades. His actions enabled U.S. Infantry to advance and reestablish a broken line on the Bataan Peninsula during the early months of the war. Sergeant Anderson's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Anderson was born in Racine, Wisconsin. He died on October 24, 1944.
