The Lider-class destroyer or Project 23560 (Shkval-class destroyer or Project 23560E for export version) is under consideration for construction for the Russian Navy as a nuclear powered combined guided missile destroyer, large anti-submarine warship and guided missile cruiser. Detailed design phase will start in 2018 and construction after 2020.[1]
Development[]
Preliminary project approval was given in 2013. Technical plans are expected to be started in 2017.[2]
Reports vary as to whether the Lider class is intended to commence building in 2018[3] or more likely 2019 according to former First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Igor Kasatonov.[2]
The ships are likely to be built at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard in Saint Petersburg.[2]
Twelve ships are planned in total for the Northern Fleet and Pacific Fleet; at the very least, a fleet needs one ship for long-range cruising, one for operating near the home shore, one for training, and one for repair.[4]
In June 2017, United Shipbuilding Corporation announced the Russian Defense Ministry had approved the preliminary design of the Lider class.[5]
Although in 2017 reports emerged the Lider-class destroyer had been dropped from the Russia's new State Armament Program for 2018-2017 due to the financing reductions,[6][7] as of June 2018, the Severnoye Design Bureau continues in work on the project and is preparing to start the technical design of the warship soon. According to the Russia's Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Armament Viktor Bursuk, the construction of the first ship may start after 2020.[1]
Design[]
"The Lider will be a universal ship, triple-hatted as a destroyer, large ASW ship and guided missile cruiser while being smaller than Project 1144 ships and carrying far more weaponry," according to Valeriy Polovinki, advisor to the director general of the Krylov State Research Center that worked out the destroyer’s preliminary design, as reported in The Defence Talk. "It is meant to replace the Sovremennyy-class destroyers, the main anti-surface warships of the Russian Navy, as well as the Slava-class cruisers and the Udaloy class anti-submarine destroyers."[3]
The Lider-class ships will be nuclear powered and have extensive food storage and stores, to give them an independent cruising capability of 90 days.[3] They will be about 200 metres (656 ft 2 in) long with a beam of 20 metres (65 ft 7 in), and a maximum speed of 32 knots (59 km/h). The vessels are estimated to displace up to 17,500 tons.[3] A flight deck and hangars will accommodate two Kamov Ka-27 or Ka-32 helicopters.
