Matose (abbr. Matr, on lists S) is the lowest rank of enlisted men in the German Navy.[1] It is grouped as OR1[2]) in NATO, and might be comparable to Seaman (lowest level) in the United States Navy / U.S. Coast Guard, as well as to Seaman in the British Royal Navy and other anglophone naval forces.[3] It is grade A3 in the pay rules of the Federal Ministry of Defence.

In navy context NCOs of this rank were formally addressed as Herr/ Frau Matrose also informally / short Matrose.
