Sierra Army Depot (SIAD) is a United States Army post and ammunition storage facility located near the unincorporated community of Herlong, California. It was built in 1942 as one of several ammunition storage facilities located far enough inland to be safe from Japanese attack.[citation needed] The site also met the requirement that the depot be in a dry and isolated area.
Mission[edit | edit source]
Core customers include the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, the United States Army Medical Materiel Agency, the Soldier Biological Chemical Command, the U.S. Army Field Support Command, and the Operations Support Command. During the 1970s and 1980s, SIAD was also used for the storage of unarmed nuclear weapons. These weapons and their storage and maintenance areas were protected by the 980th Military Police Company as a part of DARCOM.[Clarification needed]
