The Lancastrian Volunteers was a regiment of the British Army which was affiliated with many of the North West England regiments.

As Lancastrian Volunteers[]

The Lancastrian Volunteers were first formed in 1967 after the 1966 Defence White Paper. The battalion was formed from the Territorial Army battalions of the Lancastrian Brigade. The regiment had the following structure upon formation:

In 1969 the regiment had a few company changes including loosing and gaining new companies. In January 1969 D Company formed a new detachment at Blackpool. In March a new company, E (King's Own Royal Lancaster) Company was formed in Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness.

In 1971 after the Army Reserve was re-formed the regiment was renamed to the 1st Battalion, Lancastrian Volunteers. As a result, the regiment loosed their D Company. It had the following structure upon formation:

Eventually in 1973 all company subtitles were revoked. Finally in 1975 as a result of the Mason Review the regiment was disbanded and re-distributed into the new 5th/85th/8th Battalion, The King's Regiment and 4th Battalion, King's Own Royal Border Regiment.

As 5th/8th Battalion, The King's Regiment[]

The 5th/8th Battalion, The King's Regiment was formed as a result of the Mason Review. It gained Headquarters Company, B Company and C Companies from the original Lancastrian Volunteers. It had the following formation upon creation:

In 1984 after the 1981 Defence White Paper the battalion gained a new Home Service Force company. It was deemed E (Home Service Force) Company at Liverpool. A Company also moved to Warrington and D Company moved to Liverpool. Eventually in 1992 as a result of the Options for Change the battalion was reduced to 3 rifle companies. It had the following structure after the changes:

Finally in 1999 after the re-organization of the Army Reserve as part of the Strategic Defence Review the battalion was dis-established and its companies moved or disbanded.

As 4th Battalion, King's Own Royal Border Regiment[]

The 4th Battalion, King's Own Royal Border Regiment was formed as a result of the Mason Review. It gained A Company and E Company from the original Lancastrian Volunteers. It had the following formation upon creation:

  • Headquarters Company - Lancaster
  • A Company - Carlisle
  • B Company - Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness
  • C Company - Kendal

In 1984 the new E (Home Service Force) Company was formed and gained 3 new platoons:

  • 1 Platoon - Lancaster
  • 2 Platoon - Kendal
  • 3 Platoon - Carlisle

In 1988 the companies were re-organized and moved around:

  • Headquarters Company - Lancaster
  • A Company - Carlisle
  • B Company - Kendal
  • C Company - Barrow-in-Furness
  • D Company - Workington
  • E (Home Service Force) Company - Lancaster
