Verdi Beethoven Barnes (11 May 1907 – 24 January 1980) was an American Lieutenant General in the United States Army during World War II who retired in 1971.
Biography[]
Verdi Beethoven Barnes was born 11 May 1907 in California but grew up in Arizona. In 1928 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point. In 1942 during World War II he participated in the Allied landing in North Africa as commander of a field artillery battalion of the 1st Infantry Division.[1]
Barnes served as a teacher at the at the National War College before being sent to Korea in 1951 as commander of the 3rd Infantry Division's artillery. A year later he returned to Washington as deputy commander of the United States Army War College.
He retired in 1971 and died of cardiac arrest 24 January 1980 at a hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery where his grave can be found in section 11, site 75-2.[2] When his wife Jean died 14 April 1995 she was buried with him.[3]
